Digital Health Promotion Summit

Digital communication has created unique challenges and opportunities for health promotion. Despite widespread use of the internet and social media by the public, and the evidence base that supports their use, there is limited integration among government, academia, healthcare, and the technology sectors.

This second invitation-only Digital Health Promotion Executive Leadership Summit builds on the successful Summit in 2018, which produced the first consensus statement on digital health published in the American Journal of Public Health (February 2019) and a special journal issue of Health Education & Behavior now in production. The Summit will convene an exclusive group of up to 100 thought leaders working in digital health technology from government, academic circles, and private industry, including government chief information officers/architects, deans of schools of public health, and industry social media leaders.

This meeting will provide an intimate forum for catalyzing exchange among experts working in the field to improve the public’s health. Among the topics to be explored in keynote, plenary and concurrent sessions are:

  • The Opioid Crisis

  • Mental Health

  • Vaccine Hesitancy

  • Addressing Misinformation

  • Patient Engagement

  • Digital Intelligence

  • Privacy and Regulation

Surgeon General

This presentation addresses some of the major public health issues faced today in the U.S. such as opioids and the role of digital media in addressing such challenges. Moderator: M. Elaine Auld, MPH, MCHES®, Chief Executive Officer, Society for Public Health Education. Speaker: Vice Admiral Jerome M. Adams. U.S. Surgeon General

Social Media

This session will present data and stories about the role of online engagement in providing a path out of the maze of illness and despair. It will illustrate how the internet connects us not only with information, but also with each other.

Opioid Epidemic

The opioid crisis continues to take the lives of thousands of Americans each year. The stigma of admitting the need for treatment keeps many persons away from receiving needed assistance. This panel will discuss the very latest approaches to addressing the opioid epidemic via digital outreach, particularly to reduce stigma and efforts by non-profit, quasi-government, major media organizations, and industry in aligning to end the devastation that addiction causes.

Vaccine Hesitancy

Vaccine hesitancy, the reluctance or refusal to be vaccinated or to have one's children vaccinated, has been identified by the World Health Organization as one of the top ten global health threats of 2019. Falling immunization rates due to vaccine hesitancy have led to outbreaks of preventable disease, notably measles and pertussis.
